If you've ever bought a candle, you've probably come across the term “triple scented.” It sounds impressive, but what does it actually mean?
At Maison Blanche, we believe this term is misleading. It suggests that a candle has been made with three times the fragrance of a standard candle. But from a formulation and safety standpoint, that simply is not possible.
All wax types, including soy, have a maximum amount of fragrance they can safely hold. This is called the fragrance load. For soy wax, that maximum is typically around 8 percent.
If a candle maker tried to triple that amount (to 24 percent), the wax would no longer burn properly. It would tunnel, smoke, or in some cases, become a fire risk. Overloading a candle with fragrance can make it unstable and unusable.
So when a company markets a soy candle as “triple scented,” they are likely just using the full 8 percent fragrance load - the same as any well-made candle.
The phrase “triple scented” has no regulated meaning in the industry. It is not backed by science or standards. It was created as a marketing tool to suggest the candle is more highly scented than others, when in reality, it often just means properly scented.
If “triple scented” were true, it would imply that:
And yes, some companies do add chemicals to increase the fragrance saturation. But this only raises the fragrance load by a few percent - not enough to justify the “triple scented” claim. These additives often come at a cost: more smoke, reduced burn time, and the introduction of unnecessary toxins.
At Maison Blanche, we do not use gimmicks. Our candles are made with 100 percent soy and scented to the optimal level. No more, no less. This ensures a strong fragrance throw, a clean burn, and a candle that performs exactly as it should.
No inflated claims. No marketing spin. Just properly crafted, beautifully scented candles.

Yes!!
By: Frith on 11 June 2021As a candle maker this drives me crazy when I see people claiming their candles are 'triple scented' As mentioned, for a candle to be truly triple scented it means it has either been loaded to the point where the wax becomes unstable or they have added chemicals to the soy wax to hold the extra scent.
Triple scented
By: joanne reid on 1 June 2021A candid and interesting read! There are most certainly dodgy candle makers out there, hiding behind words such as 'clean burning', 'natural fragrances' etc. It is annoying as a consumer and just a little research allows you to discover all sorts of things. The notion of triple scented is actually dangerous if people were to 'triple scent' their candle, as each fragrance oil has its flash point, or the point where it evaporates. This may or may not occur with fire! Perhaps we should take them as simply using the wrong words and meaning 'triple wicked'!! LOL Thank you
Thank you!
30 May 2021Absolutely!! Sometimes it feels like I spend all day telling customers that triple scented isn't a 'thing'. Glad to see a candle maker break it down so well and easy to understand!
WOW
16 August 2016This is great information to know! Terrible some places need to hide behind lies to sell their candles.
