Brooklyn’s sprawling checkerboard of distinct neighborhoods is over three times the size of Manhattan, not to mention more diverse and far-reaching. Its varied neighborhoods range from Williamsburg – a hotbed of indie music, art and nightlife – to beachfront Coney Island and its amusement parks.

The Bagel Store

Located in Williamsburg, The Bagel Store is a true labor of love. They hand-roll every Bagel and Cragel using old-fashioned techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation. Plus, their stunning Rainbow Bagel is something you can’t miss!

Coney Island

About 50 minutes by subway from Midtown, this popular beach neighborhood makes for a great day trip. The wide sandy beach of Coney Island has retained its nostalgic, kitschy and slightly sleazy charms, wood-plank boardwalk and the famous 1927 Cyclone roller coaster amid a modern amusement-park area.

Brooklyn Bridge

There’s a sublime moment that occurs when you reach the top of the Brooklyn Bridge – the marine breeze whiffing up from the East River, traffic rattling along on the roadway below, hundreds of people shuffling past you and the Manhattan skyline working its magic in the background.

Don’t worry – you’ll probably be spared from endless sock vendors at this Fort Greene bazaar. The space outside of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School on Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues offers a quirky roster of items, including a slew of antiques, vintage clothes, records, art and jewellry.

Prospect Park Zoo

At this interactive wildlife center, you can walk along the Discovery Trail and come face to face with Oggie and his new pal Dixie, two North American river otters. Keep hopping down the path to find the Australian Walkabout’s kangaroo and the new rock wallabies, whose grooved hind paws easily, grip the boulders in their steep habitat. A pair of native South African scops owls – recognizable by their bright white faces roost in the aviary along the trail.
